Provider Networks, Explained
If you've heard "we don't accept that plan," you're not alone — and it's not your doctor's fault, or yours. It comes down to networks. Here's how it works — and how families across the country fix it. (Want the full picture first? See our Private Medical PPO Plans guide.)
See Which Plans Your Doctor May Accept
Your doctor didn't stop caring about you. What changed is the network — the list of plans a medical office agrees to work with. Offices drop plans for a few common reasons:
Many marketplace and HMO plans keep premiums down by contracting with a smaller list of doctors and hospitals. If your doctor isn't on the list, the front desk has to say no.
Some plans pay offices so little per visit that practices stop taking them to keep the lights on.
A plan that included your doctor last year may quietly drop them this year — and you often find out at the front desk.
Who don't have employer coverage and want real doctor access.
Job changes, COBRA running out, aging off a parent's plan.
Who need coverage that keeps their doctors until Medicare begins.

Yes — offices choose which plan networks they contract with, and those contracts change.
Premiums vary by age, area, and plan design. Some families pay more than a narrow-network plan, some pay less — comparing is the only way to know, and you may qualify for options you haven't seen. Our private PPO plans page explains how these plans work.
Not always. Losing employer coverage, moving, and certain life events can open a window — and some private plans enroll year-round.
Nothing. Advisors are paid by the insurance carriers; you pay the same premium either way.
